Varanus Komodoensis survives primarily on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rintja, Flores and Padar. Despite government protection, its existence is threatened by the depletion of its chief food, deer and wild boar due to overhunting by the native people. The Komodo dragon has a broad head and a thick, muscular neck; the body is flattened, and the tail is as long as the trunk and head. Its powerful legs carry the body well off the ground. The skin and scales of the adult are gray-brown. The Komodo dragon often preys upon deer and wild boar. Food is devoured with the help of long claws and serrated teeth, used to tear large chunks of meat from a sizable kill. This feeding strategy is rare among reptiles, which commonly swallow prey whole. The Komodo dragon hunts during
the day, mainly for live prey, but it will also eat carrion.
A keen sense of smell brings other dragons from great distances
to a kill. The smaller dragons are kept at bay until the larger
lizards have gorged enough to satisfy their appetite for as
long as a week. Young lizards feed also an insects and small
mammals, reptiles, and birds. Today, it is much easier to visit Komodo , Rinca and Flores to see the Varanus Komodensis. I have seen more than 100 times myself, I still like to see them again, What's next:

have had the opportunity to see this Giant Lizard in 27 July
1975 as the first time after 3 days cruise on a catamaran
boat with 25 European journalist and Italian tourist who dream
to see and took pictures of this world known prehistoric animal.
Yes, Komodo, the largest of the monitor lizards, growing to
a length of 10 feet (3 meters) and a weight of 300 pounds
(136 kg). An old species, Varanus komodoensis, it was
unknown outside its native habitat until 1912. We built leaf
fance to hide, hang a dead goat on a tree which already had
a very bad smelt as a bait, then the Varanus Komodoensis came
down from hills, walked in the bush..........and alll of us
ready with camera..clik, clik, clik. That was really memorable.
There was no Ranger on the Island, we had to go to Labuan
Bajo in the western tip of Flores Island to pick them up.
The Policeman who brought with their gun also come along
to secure us not to be swallon by the Komodo.
